Getting Your Bathroom Heater Wattage Right (Without Burning Your Budget)
First things first: bathrooms are wet. That’s why you need an IPX4 rating. It’s basically a fancy way of saying the heater won’t freak out or short-circuit the moment a bit of water splashes on it. Safety first, right? But once you’ve got the right gear, you have to figure out the power. If you get the wattage wrong, you’re either shivering in a cold room or feeling like you’re standing inside a toaster.
Finding the Sweet Spot
Here is the thing about infrared lamps: they don’t actually heat the air. They heat you. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—don’t overdo it. A 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. If you throw a 1000W beast in there, you’ll create this oppressive pocket of heat that feels claustrophobic. Plus, your electric bill will hate you. Now, if you’ve got a big master bath (maybe 8m² to 12m²), you’ll need more muscle. Go for a 1200W unit, or better yet, a couple of 600W lamps spread out. That way, you aren’t freezing on one side of the room while the other side is roasting. And a quick tip: don’t go too low on the power. If the lamp is too weak, it’ll just run at full blast forever, trying to reach a temperature it can’t hit. That’s a great way to burn out the filament way faster than it should.
The Trade-off with High Power
It’s tempting to just buy the most powerful lamp available because it heats up faster. But there’s a catch. More wattage means more intense heat. This puts a lot of pressure on your wiring and the housing. If the unit isn’t vented properly, that heat builds up at the base and can actually warp the seals. If those seals go, your “splash-proof” rating goes with them. Not ideal.
Making it Work for You
If you want to save some cash, hook the heater up to a timer or a motion sensor. Infrared is instant. There’s no “warm-up” period, so there’s zero reason to leave it running while you’re not in the room. As for where to put it? Aim for about 2.1 to 2.4 meters high. If you hang it too low, you’ll get a “hot spot.” You know the feeling—where you have to keep stepping backward just to stop yourself from sweating. It totally ruins the vibe. Keep it high, keep it balanced, and you’re set.
