
How to actually keep a bathroom warm
Let’s be honest: there is nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing cold bathroom. You’ve got high humidity and a room that sucks the heat right out of your skin. It’s miserable. To fix this, we don’t bother trying to warm up the air. That takes too long. Instead, we use shortwave infrared (SWIR) emitters. Think of it like the sun. You don’t wait for the air around you to get hot before you feel the sun on your face; you feel it the second you step outside. That’s exactly how these lamps work. They send energy straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. You flip a switch, and you’re warm. Period.
The guts of the system
Inside these units, there’s a tungsten filament tucked into a high-purity quartz tube. When it kicks on, it hits a temperature that sends out those shortwave rays. Because these rays don’t get bogged down by the air, the heat hits you instantly. We usually go with halogen-filled tubes. Why? Because they last longer and can handle higher temperatures without burning out. We also make sure the quartz is rated for “thermal shock.” If it isn’t, the glass could crack the moment it goes from cold to scorching hot.
The tricky part: Power and Heat
Here is where it gets a bit technical. You have to find a balance between how much heat you want and what your electrical panel can actually handle. If you go with a massive wattage lamp, you get a ton of heat fast. But if you cram too many of those into a small ceiling fixture, you’re asking for trouble. You could easily overload the circuit breaker or, worse, melt the insulation on your wires. To keep things safe, we always use high-temperature cabling. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a cozy bathroom and a fire hazard.
Getting the installation right
These units are designed to slide right into standard luxury fixtures, but where you put them matters. Since the heat is focused, the “warm zone” is pretty specific. If you mount the lamp too high, the heat dissipates before it reaches you. Too low? You’ll end up with annoying hot spots that feel like you’re under a magnifying glass. It’s all about the spacing. When you get it right, the whole area just feels comfortable and controlled.
