
Can a simple lamp swap actually pump out more bottles?
If you’re running a mid-sized PET plant, you probably have a few blowing machines that are starting to show their age. They just aren’t hitting the cycle times they used to. Your first instinct might be to call the dealer and order a whole new machine. But before you drop that kind of cash, take a look at your oven. Most of the time, the real problem is just bad heat distribution. Swapping out those tired, worn-out heating elements for high-density infrared lamps can actually move the needle on your daily output. The science bit (simplified) Getting a PET preform just right is a balancing act. You want it hot, but not so hot that you get those ugly pearlescent streaks or thin walls that pop under pressure. We use short-wave infrared lamps because they punch through the plastic much faster. When you switch to a higher wattage—like moving from a basic element to a high-output halogen tube—you’re basically cranking up the heat flux. That’s the win. It means you can speed up the conveyor or even cut down the number of heating zones you’re using. Will it actually fit? We designed these to be drop-in replacements. If your machine uses R7s or SK15 connectors, you just wire them in. No need to rip out sockets or modify your hardware. We also use heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because cheap tubes bow when they get hot, and that ruins your heat profile. These stay straight. One quick warning: keep an eye on your voltage. A 400V lamp gives you a lot more power, but it puts a heavier load on your power supply. If you push the wattage too far beyond what your transformer can handle, you’re going to blow a fuse or fry your controller. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday. The trade-off Here is the thing: more heat density means faster heating, but it also means your cooling blowers have to work overtime. If your ventilation is clogged or just too small for the job, the air inside the oven will spike. If that happens, you’ll overshoot the PET glass transition temperature. Your preforms will start sticking or deforming before they even hit the mold. It’s all about the balance. Crank the heat, but make sure your airflow can keep up.
