
Why we’re ditching old bathroom heat lamps for infrared
You know those old-school bathroom heat lamps? The ones that basically just look like giant, blinding lightbulbs? They’re pretty wasteful. Most of that energy goes into making the room bright instead of actually making you warm. That’s why we’ve been moving toward waterproof infrared (IR) heaters. Instead of trying to heat up every cubic inch of air in the room, these things beam heat directly at you—and your mirror.
How it actually works
Here’s the thing: these units use a quartz tube that sends out short-wave radiation. It doesn’t bother with the air. Instead, it makes the water molecules on your skin and the mirror surface vibrate. The result? You feel the warmth the second you flip the switch. No waiting around. We use these for mirrors specifically because they keep the glass just warm enough that steam can’t settle. No more wiping the mirror with a towel just to see your face.
Dealing with the steam
Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the humidity and the steam, standard heaters usually just give up—they short-circuit or burn out. The high-end IR heaters we use have IP-rated seals and coated glass to keep moisture far away from the electrical bits. If you try to cut corners with a non-waterproof unit, the constant heating and cooling will eventually crack the seals. Then you’ve got a problem.
A few things to keep in mind
If you’re putting these into a renovation, don’t just plug them into your existing light switch. You can’t. Because these heaters pack a lot of punch, they need their own dedicated circuit. If you try to wire them into a low-amp light circuit, you’re just going to keep tripping your breakers. It’s worth getting the wiring right the first time. One more tip: short-wave IR is intense. If the heater is too close, it can feel a bit biting on the skin. It’s all about the angle. We spend a little extra time during installation to make sure the heat hits the mirror and your standing area just right, so it feels like a cozy glow rather than a heat lamp at a buffet.
