
Can New Infrared Elements Actually Save Your Old Blowing Machine?
If you’re running a small or mid-sized bottle plant, you know the frustration of an aging machine. It works, but it’s slow. You want more bottles per hour, but the idea of dropping a fortune on a brand-new machine is enough to make anyone cringe. Here is a little secret: usually, the problem isn’t the whole machine. It’s just the oven. If your lamps are worn out, your cycle times suffer. But swapping those old bulbs for high-density infrared modules can actually change the math on your daily output.
Why the heat matters
Most of those older rigs rely on basic quartz lamps. They get the job done, but they’re not efficient. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared technology. Think of it as a more concentrated punch of energy that sinks into the PET preform wall much faster. When you move to a high-wattage halogen element, the plastic gets up to temperature quicker. That means you can speed up the conveyor without worrying about under-heated plastic ruining your batch. It’s a simple shift that makes the whole line feel snappier.
The nitty-gritty on fitment
Nobody wants to spend three days modifying a chassis just to fit a new lamp. That’s why we stick to drop-in replacements. Whether you’re dealing with R7s or Sk15 connectors, the footprint has to be a perfect match. For the bigger tubes, we usually go with a 400V high-voltage setup. It keeps the current under control even when you’re pushing over 2000W per lamp. Plus, we use heavy-duty quartz glass because nobody has time to deal with lamps burning out every few weeks.
A word of caution: Don’t melt your oven
Now, more heat isn’t just a “magic button.” There’s a catch. If you cram high-output modules into an old frame, your cooling fans have to work harder. If your vents are clogged with dust or just too small for the new wattage, you’re going to overheat the frame. If that happens, your reflectors will warp, and you’re right back where you started. Check your airflow first. Seriously.
What happens during installation
Getting the new modules wired up is pretty easy. But do me a favor: check your contactors. High-wattage lamps pull a lot of current the second they kick on. If your relays are ancient, they might actually weld shut. It’s a pain to fix, so just swap them out while you’re already in there. Once the lamps are in and the wiring is solid, you’ll usually see about 10-15% more bottles per hour. Not bad for a few afternoons of work.
