
Getting the Heat Right for Your Husky HyPET Preforms
If you’re running Husky HyPET systems, you know the struggle. You need the heat to hit fast and stay even, or you’re looking at scorched resin and ruined cycle times. We don’t just throw heat at the plastic. We build our quartz elements to hit the specific “sweet spots” of PET. By focusing on high-intensity short-wave radiation, we make sure the heat actually sinks into the core of the preform. No more worrying about the surface burning while the center stays cold. The Power Side of Things To get that deep penetration, we push more wattage into a shorter length of tube. We use a precision-wound tungsten filament and higher voltage to crank up the spectral radiance. Basically, more photons hit the plastic in a shorter window. You hit that glass transition temperature way faster. But here’s a heads-up: this kind of heat density is tough on your reflectors. If yours are pitted or looking oxidized, you’re throwing away a huge chunk of your heating power. Keep them clean. The Nitty-Gritty on Materials We use high-purity fused quartz because nobody wants their tubes clouding up halfway through a run. For the Husky setups, we use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. It sounds simple, but a snug fit is everything. A loose connection leads to arcing, and before you know it, you’ve got melted sockets. We also add some internal coatings to shift the emission spectrum. This pushes the energy deeper into the plastic wall. It fixes that annoying “skin effect” where the outside of the bottle is toasted but the inside is still chilly. Making it Work in Your Oven These elements are designed to drop right into the tight space of a HyPET oven. Because they heat so efficiently, you can actually shorten your heating zone and speed up your cycles. Just be careful. Running these at peak wattage makes the inside of the oven housing get pretty hot. Check your blower motors and cooling vents. If they’re clogged with dust, the tube ends can overheat and blow your seals. A little bit of cleaning goes a long way in keeping these things running.
